Paris in the Summer

TLG Aerospace is excited to announce our team will be heading to the 53rd Paris Air Show this June 17th through the 23rd. Traveling to the show will be our Director of Engineering (FAA Flight Analyst/Flutter DER) Robert Lind and our Director of Program Management, Steve Nelson.

TLG will be exhibiting with the Washington State Pavilion (Hall 3) in the USA Pavilion as a part of showcasing our state as a U.S. leader in aerospace engineering excellence.

TLG’s expertise with four FAA DER’s and an experienced leadership staff with more than 150 years of collective experience is always looking forward to new programs and providing critical engineering analysis from aerodynamic concept development through FAA and EASA Certification. TLG will be looking forward to connecting with industry innovators, aircraft developers, and especially with startups exploring new aircraft designs and OEMs considering their next major modification.

Dating back to 1909, and now with over 140 aircraft expected to be exhibiting, the “Salon du Bourget” promises to bring together all the major players from across the industry. So, while the team can’t wait for the flying displays and to try the VR in the Paris Air Lab, we also look forward to meeting you and helping your company succeed on your aircraft development programs.

TLG Aerospace Featured in Siemens Case Study

TLG Aerospace is proud to be featured in a case study by Siemens. Using the Siemens Simcenter STAR-CCM+ software, TLG was able to eliminate some testing requirements by utilizing CFD data, save certification costs, and reduce cost per simulation.

“We can now bid on projects that have greater scope, be more competitive, pass on the savings to our customers and do much more with our dollar,” says Andrew McComas, TLG Engineering Manager.

Amazon Web Services Features TLG in Case Study

TLG Aerospace is proud to be featured in a case study by Amazon Web Services (AWS). TLG is leading the aerospace industry by utilizing AWS HPC resources to quickly run CFD jobs using >1,000 cores for models exceeding 100M cells.

“Using AWS, we aren’t limited in our ability to scale STAR-CCM+ jobs,” Engineering Manager Andrew McComas said. “We have the opportunity to go much bigger if we need to, and we will be prepared for very large computational fluid dynamics projects now. That’s important for us, because that’s the way the industry is headed.”

TLG Assists in Certification of XCub

Cub Crafters unveiled the XCub on June 6, its second certified aircraft. The XCub combines the classic cub design with today’s technology and comforts, making it faster and more enjoyable to fly than ever before.

Cub Crafters unveiled the project with Part 23 certification in hand, making the XCub immediately available to adventure seekers.

TLG Aerospace assisted in the certification process of the XCub, providing flutter analysis, ground vibration test, and flutter flight test support for the project.

The XCub is the fastest Cub ever, able to reach top speeds of over 150 miles per hour. The aircraft also has a range of close to 1,000 miles, marking a giant step forward in the evolution of the cub series.

Cub Crafters was founded by Jim Richmond in 1980 as a way to restore Piper Cubs. In 1999, Cub Crafters began designing new planes, going on to produce seven different cubs.

UW Senior Capstone Project Sponsored by TLG Presents Final Design Review

The University of Washington senior capstone project on UAV use in precision agriculture, sponsored by TLG Aerospace, presented its final design review Wednesday.

The review marks the completion of months of work by the team, which developed a fixed-wing UAV to make crop spraying and seeding more efficient.

TLG Engineering Manager and UW alumnus Andrew McComas worked with the team, which applied for an FAA CoA and ran flight tests.

The project helped UW make Dronethusiast’s list of the 16 best drone universities.

TLG attended the FDR, including President and Chief Engineer Steve Muenzberg, Director of Finance and Administration Scott Dickson and McComas.

NBAA 2015 Annual Meeting and Convention

Kenmore Air to help turn 100 Chinese turboprops into seaplanes

Kenmore Air Harbor, parent company of the Pacific Northwest floatplane company, quietly landed a China contract worth about $40 million during Chinese President Xi Jinping’s visit here.

Kenmore President Todd Banks said state-owned Aviation Industry Corporation of China (AVIC) signed an agreement with Kenmore to design, certify and manufacture the pontoon floats that will convert 100 Chinese-made Harbin Y-12 twin-engine turboprops into seaplanes.

EDO Floats, a subsidiary acquired by Kenmore in 1998 that has designed and built aluminum seaplane floats since the 1920s, will oversee the certification by the Federal Aviation Administration. The U.S. certification is accepted by the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC).

Banks said one Chinese Y-12 airplane will fly over to Seattle in January to be retrofitted with the new floats and to conduct certification flights.

TLG Aerospace, an engineering-services company on Lake Union near Kenmore’s seaplane base, will design the airplane modifications and process certification of the parts. The carbon-fiber floats will be manufactured by composites-fabrication company CUG in Scappoose, Ore.

Banks estimates the contract will create about 20 jobs in Washington and Oregon.

Kenmore expects to start shipping sets of floats to China toward the end of 2017.

TLG Aerospace is First MSC Apex User in North America

MSC released their Apex Computer Aided Engineering (CAE) system on September 30, 2014. Apex is the world’s first computational parts based CAE system based on modern computational capabilities. MSC Apex provides an efficient and satisfying workflow to complete CAE tasks – particularly modeling and meshing tasks which were time consuming and frustrating using traditional programs.

TLG Aerospace is proud to be the first MSC Apex user in North America. We are seeing immediate efficiency and process improvements from the use of Apex for modeling and meshing.
